About · the honest why

I’m Ryan. Here’s the honest, slightly selfish why.

I’m an experiential anthropologist. That’s a fancy way of saying I’ve spent twenty-five years chasing one question: what actually helps real people? Not on paper, in a study. In a real body, in a real life.

Ryan, founder of Health Reviewers

What change exactly? And how? Why that thing for that person and not another? And most importantly: what do those changes feel like? How does that affect how we think, feel, speak and act toward ourselves, others, and the world around us?

This is what I’m consumed with.

Fair trade, no halo

I’m not pretending this is a charity.

Health Reviewers is the largest real-world experiment I can run into what actually helps people feel better. To run it, I need one thing that’s surprisingly hard to come by: honest, first-hand accounts of what these technologies are really like to use.

So I pay for your sessions. You get access to real wellness technology you’d probably never have gone looking for on your own. I get your real, in-your-own-body experience. You win, I win, and nobody has to dress it up as something nobler than that.

You’re not a customer I’m trying to close. You’re a participant in something I genuinely care about. That distinction runs through everything here, and I work hard to keep it honest.

“What works best is what you’ll actually use.
My mentor, Lindsay Brady, said that to me years ago. It quietly reorganized how I think about all of this.
The idea underneath

The best technology in the world does nothing if you won’t use it.

The whole industry optimizes for what performs best in a study. But a device only matters if it fits your body, your life, and your actual week. The number on the paper isn’t the point. What you’ll genuinely come back to is the point.

And there’s only one way to find that out: feel it for yourself. Not read about it. Not get sold on it. Feel it, and notice honestly what happened.

What I’m actually up against

Right now, people find their thing the slow, expensive way.

They get nudged through hype cycle after hype cycle, sold on someone’s promise and a story, usually before they’ve felt a single thing. The loudest brand wins, not the one that actually fits them. And plenty of what gets sold carries a quiet markup they never see.

None of that tells you what a technology is genuinely like. That’s the gap I’m trying to close, in the least glamorous way imaginable: by asking real people, and writing it down.

The promise

Months, not a decade.

Most people spend something like ten years, and real money, drifting toward the handful of things that actually work for them. I think that’s absurd.

The point of Health Reviewers is to compress that: try a lot, fast, cheap, and close to home. Find your fit now, instead of a decade from now.

A quiet side effect

You get sharper, too.

The more sessions you sit through and describe, the better you get at reading your own body: noticing what shifts, and telling the difference between what you want to work and what actually does. That’s a genuinely valuable skill to build, and it stays with you long after any single session.

I’m building tools to help with exactly that (the first, the Independent Review Lab, is now in beta), so your own journey becomes something you can actually see, not just a vague memory of things you once tried.

A note on what this is

Health Reviewers works to make it easy for health enthusiasts to access and review existing, new, and emerging wellness technologies and services. To make that viable, it turns what reviewers experience into genuinely valuable, anonymized, curated, longitudinal findings for providers, developers, and researchers, and for reviewers themselves.

It is a playfulness.com initiative under the lens of Experiential Anthropology: a behavioral research program, not a medical one. Some services offered to qualified Health Reviewers may be medical in nature and are always delivered by the licensed providers who offer them. Health Reviewers does not provide medical care, advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and nothing here is a health claim. Always consult a qualified professional about your own health.
